Update 2.0

Literally just come back from cyrpus, and have been unable to do much work and unable to contact katie or Reece (Cyprian Wifi is awful), however I have in fact done some Digipack research whilst i was away. On tuesday i will catch up with reece and Katie (I have spoken to them briefly, and we do need to do a storyboard properly and have a schedule asap) I personnally would like to start filming on sunday, however katie dislikes that idea and we need to find a time that will suit us all.

The Killers Digipack

(I'm aware some of these are upside down, and to counter it you will probably have to save the pictures to your computer and rotate them, or just turn your head upside down)

The Killers are an indie/alternative rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada. Their album Hot Fuss is considered the album that really kick started their career. The digipack is quite effect due to it's simplistic style, with a not too busy front cover of a blue sky and faded skyscrapers. The booklet itself continues with this simplistic theme, as the whole booklet is just the  band members in various shots with stark lighting with a black background.

This could show us for our project that we don't need to have a massively flash style album cover, that we could go for something simplistic and practical, and which will also go towards the conventions of artistic integrity.

BLINK 182 - ALL THE SMALL THINGS LYRICS

Opening Scene -  My idea is the beginning should have an Establishing Shot of the tennis court then in a pan from left to right (still in the same shot) then an another Establishing Shot taking place right after of the hallways. Another possible idea is that before the start of the song is to have very quick snappy shots of the band members, For example; The first one of the bottom of the guitar with the guitarists hand on it, the second of the drummers feet and the pedal on the drum and the last one of the Singer’s mouth near the microphone.

Live Sequences- My ideas for shots for this in include a medium two shot, with the singer in the front, but slightly to the side, with the other band member behind him out of focus, then switching so that the other member is in focus and the singer is out of focus.  Another idea that I got from Slipknot’s Sulphur (Different genre I know) is that for the guitar to have a small camera on the bottom or top so that you can get some really shaky erratic shots. Also we could do something similar with the drum kits with having a camera on the foot pedal.

Narrative ideas – Plenty of ideas that mostly revolve around shot reverse shots of the boy and girl, whether they are crossing each other’s path etc etc. (Think of the typical school hallway when a boy and girl glance at each other) other ideas. Another idea is that as the girl walks down the hallways she is tracked side by side with the camera, showing her walk along the corridor.

Other ideas such as them meeting up with the band near the end of the performance, or even meeting up in the live performance bit in front of the band. Also another idea would be to have some ‘cameo’ appearances of the band members within the clip such as bumping into the protagonists or swearing or whatever.

Note: Reece made a good point that if we are unable to get enough people for our video, we could reuse for other roles etc such as the lead singer for the Male in the narrative.

TREATMENT FOR AN ALTERNATIVE ROCK MUSIC VIDEO

Song: ‘’Blink 182 – All the small things’’

 

Synopsis

The music video will be accordingly 2 minutes and 53 seconds from a cover song from Tweedaa, the choice being ‘’All the small things’’ by the original title artist blink 182. The song focuses on five of the conventional themes, alcohol, drugs, freedom of youth, sex and isolation (at the beginning); the piece will focus on a three person band and two main characters.

The narrative of the music video will be chronological follow a young man and woman over a day, transcending from the theme of isolation to alcohol, drugs, freedom of youth and sex (and possibly party themed). There will be a lot of emphasis of these themes and during both chorus and verse, the narrative will reflect/portray (conventionally, reflect a ‘’fantasy’’ of the lyrics) the lyrics of the song. The chorus particularly will have abstract fill shots to emphasis on these particular themes.

The music video will also have a live performance section, often out weighing the narrative in terms of seconds; the live performance will take up just under 2/3 of the song (effectively the live performance will be 100 seconds whilst the narrative will be 73 seconds) in accordance to genre based conventions.

The characters in the narrative and live performance band members will reflect the themes of the genre as well as identifying conventions with their audience (teenage, male / female, young adult) e.g. this will be attributed through school narrative, type of song, themes, costume and possible props that we have identified throughout our research into the genre.

 

Style

The video will generally be up-beat and light hearted (with very little drama and tension except for the pre-get together of the two characters) whilst focusing intensely on the genre themes. The nature of the tone and atmosphere can be shown through the editing style of pace in relation to song tempo and emphasis on particular notes from instruments; in production, lighting may be used to further expose the shots to bring this method forward. In post-production (e.g. editing) template effects will be used to alter colour control (e.g. possible white balance could be slightly off put and slightly colourful) to reflect this further.

Audience

In terms of a demographic classification the age group “All the small things” would have will most likely be the age group oriented around the 13-17 category as the themes present in the song reflect the themes often associated with youth culture such as freedom of youth and a theme of the glorification of sex, drugs and alcohol. It is difficult to determine a specified gender since seemingly the audience for alternative rock is usually not specified as they try to attract both men and women and do not always emphasize a clear preference.

 

Technical requirements

The technical requirements of this production will be:

The availability of the cameras will depend on our shooting time scale (estimated at 2 weeks) and the availability of the equipment; all other software we have 24 hour access to for the period of 6 weeks.

 

Contingency Time

The project will have ¼ of the total time frame for production to finish, giving us 1 and ½ week if all else fails.

Enter Shikari - Flash Flood of Colour

Enter Shikari are a Britsh Alternative metal/ Rock hardcore band, and their latest release on the 16^th January, ‘Flash Flood of Colour’ album cover has all the conventions of the usual Rock/metal music genre, with a very artistic album cover, with a eerie surroundign and with a a very high contrast logo illuminating the surrounding. What is interesting about the album is that there isno Named logo at all or any lettering on the front of the album, suggesting that Enter Shikari want the Logo to resemble them rather than just words. The vinyl cover is also interesting, but keeps in theme with the Giant illuminating logo in an eerie enviroment.

 

 



 

 

 

Update

After speaking to Reece and Katie about how we will present the live performance version of our clip,we have decided to change it so their will be no audience in the live performance due to numerous reasons.

1. Unreliable due the amount of people we need, and if they would actually come or not.
2. If someone in the audience does something wrong, for example: pull a funny face in the camera when they shouldn't, it woill tak emore time to redo the shot.
3. Time. It will be quicker to organise a 3 person band rather than say 25 people.

Moving on, Katie has had some good news that we will be able to use very high quality cameras (professional ones too!) called HDV SD Pro Camera. (The name means nothing to me but apparently they are excellent quality).
